Cajun Spice Dinner Rolls
5:00:00 AM
Does anybody else have random ideas about cooking like me?
Like…why can’t I make dinner rolls out of pizza dough?
Or…why can’t I put Cajun seasoning into bread?
Am I the only one? Well, my husband is very happy that I
have these random thoughts. I had a
basic pizza roll recipe, and these random ideas led to some Cajun
seasoned dinner rolls! Let me tell you, this is the first time…ever…that my
husband didn’t complain about the texture of bread with whole wheat flour in it!
The secret to using whole wheat flour is to add a little more moisture into the
mix. And with a bread machine, the dough
is made for you. All you have to do is shape the dough and go!
Oh, and please don’t be put off about using Cajun seasoning.
This bread has only the slightest hint of spice—it really just gives a depth of
flavor and a hint of smokiness.
Here’s what you need:
1 ¾ cup warm water
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 ¼ cup whole wheat flour
3 cups white flour
2 tsp sugar
2 tsp salt
1 package of active dry yeast
1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
Additional olive oil to brush on top of rolls
Dump all ingredients into the bucket of your bread machine. This
is the order that is recommended by my bread machine manufacturer. If your
bread machine has a different preferred method, by all means, follow it. Set
your bread machine to the “dough” setting. Let it go through that setting—my bread
machine takes about an hour and a half
to make dough.
After the dough is finished, turn it out onto a floured
surface and flatten and shape into a rough rectangle that is ¾” to 1” thick. Preheat
oven to 400 degrees F. Use a knife or a bench scraper to cut the dough in
quarters. Cut each quarter into 6 equal pieces. Place on a non-stick surface
and brush the tops of each roll with olive oil. Bake for about 15-17 minutes,
until lightly browned.
Serve warm. Makes 24 rolls.
