Jackson Pollock Style Subway Art--Color Outside the Lines

8:34:00 PM

You may or may not be aware that I'm taking part in One Artsy Mama's One Crafty Contest. The first week's challege was paint, and I decided that I wouldn't just use paint, I would celebrate it. Paint is everywhere—walls, furniture, even our fingernails—so sometimes I think that it is overlooked. My project attempts to make paint the focus of this piece of art, in a Jackson Pollock style subway art.

I’ve been wanting some inspiring artwork for my office, something that would not only be beautiful, but remind me to be creative. Sometimes, I get bound up by the "rules" that I think I must follow...so I need a reminder to "color outside the lines!"

I made custom stencils using my Silhouette Portrait and some contact paper. I placed the contact paper onto the canvas (with some base paint where I wanted the color of the shapes to be other colors and then layered on some Mod Podge to keep the paint from bleeding under the stencils. Then I painted the navy color over the whole thing.

I created the "line" with some painters tape...then I used a technique to layer on the swirls of paint that tries to imitate Jackson Pollock's painting technique.

Don't be fooled-- this technique can easily be done by kiddos in the house--just squirt some paint on! Once the paint is dry, carefully remove the stencils. This modern art look is both a celebration of paint and a literal take on coloring outside the lines.

If you get a chance, go by One Artsy Mama before noon on Tuesday to vote for your favorite washi tape crafts...I hope you pick mine as one of your favorites!
