Friday Fun: Reading & Blogging

8:38:00 PM

Lil Bit is almost 5. She turns 5 in December. Unfortunately, that means that she doesn't go to kindergarten for another year.

But she really, really wants to go to kindergarten.

And she really wants to read. She loves to pretend to read to her sisters. And since she loves to pretend and make up stories, it's actually pretty entertaining to listen to her read.

But apparently one of the "big" boys at her daycare...one of the kids in the afterschool program told her that she couldn't read. And she took it to heart. We were working on sounding out some words in a story a few days back and she told me "I can't read."

Then she told me about this boy who told her this.

I could tell that she had been hurt by the young man's words, and she was frustrated with the progress she was making.

Now, Lil Bit sees me read quite a bit. When my husband and I commute together, I  read a book to him, and often we continue reading after we pick the kids up.

So I asked her if she thought I read well. The answer was yes. So I told her the truth....that I love to read, but when I was first learning it, I didn't like it. It was hard. But I kept working on it, and it got easier, and I realized one day that I loved it. So I encouraged her to keep trying, and we tried a couple of different techniques in reading.

And wouldn't you know it, by the end of the evening, she had a half-dozen sight words she didn't have before!

The parallels to this story & my experience in blogging is pretty strong. I'm struggling with feeling like I am not successful at blogging. (This is not a call for pity--just keeping it real). But I find that I love it, so I'm going to keep doing it, maybe trying some new things. And maybe by the end of the week...month...year...I'll have a few new successes I didn't have before!

I hope that your weekend is full of blessings.

  7. Don't take this the wrong way, but I giggled a bit when I read this post because TO ME you're a very successful at blogging. As someone new to the game I see your featured buttons and think "I'd love to be featured one day:)" Combined with three little kids AND practicing architecture - I'm impressed! I'm just hoping to have someone other than my family and friends read my posts actually:)

My oldest also missed Kindergarten cut-off this year (Oct. 1st - even closer). She wants to read but doesn't want to practice so progress is pretty slow going.

Have a good weekend, Lindsey @ If I had a million hours...

    1. Lindsey, Thanks so much! I needed all the encouragement I got today.

If you want to be featured, submit to {lots} of link parties. All those parties at the end of my posts...I link up to most of them every single week. The law of averages says that the more you submit, the more chance to get featured. I'm sure you'll get featured, too!

Oh, and I read your posts! So you have one follower besides your friends and family.

  8. Don't know if my first comment went through??

Not to be taken in the wrong way, but this post made me giggle a little bit because I see you as a very successful blogger! I dream of being featured someday - you've got a decent number of buttons to your name. Combined with practicing architecture and three young kids - doing pretty well in my book:)

  11. I think we all feel like we are failing from time to time... my blog is something that sometimes I wonder if it's worth keeping... I love it and I love the relationships I've formed... that keeps me going... my doubts are not based on how much I enjoy it and how much I do love my "regulars" ... but on my own ability... is it good enough? am I making a difference? does it even matter? -sigh- ... Interestingly I was talking to my 4 year old (she turned 4 in September) yesterday about something similar... She was getting quite frustrated with "her letters" ... I am trying to teach her how to put together some words (she does write her name) but she just wants to write like mommy and daddy... I told her I couldn't write when I was her age, not the way I do now... and that seemed to help her... so you did a good thing encouraging your daughter by telling her you were frustrated at times too... I hope it encourages you to know that I feel like you do with blogging at times... and that I am sure all those people that have succeeded at it, have had those same feelings. Thank you so much for your comment on my SITS Day yesterday! ;)
