As You Wish--Wooden Signs

9:44:00 PM

Sometimes I feel like I only blog in the here and now--you know, what I've been doing recently. This blog is going to take you back a bit in time. I'm going to share with you my very favorite movie, and a craft that I did in honor of that awesome movie.

I'm not a romantic movie kind of girl. My husband thinks he's a pretty lucky guy, since I'm all about a good action movie, or even a science fiction flick. I never have seen a Nicholas Sparks movie--although I think I have a dvd of his around here...but anyway, with that said, it is a little surprising that my favorite movie is a romance movie--or at least a spoof of one. I'm not even the biggest fan of comedy, but this movie definitely strikes a chord with my sarcasm.

I'll let you guess what the movie is. Here are some famous quotes:

"Inconceivable!"

"Anybody want a  peanut?"

And perhaps one of the most famous and random movie quotes: "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to Die."

Do you know what movie it is?

If you don't you really have to check it out on netflix.

So do you know?

It's the Princess Bride.

My favorite quote in the movie is "As you wish." You know, the thing that Wesley keeps telling Buttercup until she realizes, "what he was really saying was, 'I love you.'" Except whenever I see the quote, I hear it like this
...as...
...you...
...wish...

You know, like a guy falling down a hill and saying it. And if you don't get it, you really need to rent that movie.

Anyway, I had these little wood decking samples that I scavenged when my office moved a few months ago, and I wanted to used them to make signs with that quote.

I found this tutorial here at DiddleDumpling on how to transfer inkjet prints with just water, and I had to give it a whirl! Basically, I took the decking samples, about 5"x5" and painted them with white craft paint.

While I was waiting on the paint to dry, I took my text and sized it as I wanted. Then I reversed it (flipped it in photoshop) and printed it out.

I placed the paper ink side down on the sample and wrapped it around the sample to keep it from sliding.

I took a damp brush and dampened the paper. You want it just barely damp. Trust me, this paper you see below was just a little too damp. I took an embossing tool and rubbed the text so that the ink transferred all the way.

Then I removed the paper and voila--the ink had transferred. In Diddle Dumpling's blog, she used a marker to darken the text, but I liked the rough look--it was kind of like that farmhouse in which The Princess Bride starts...as a matter of fact, I beat up the board with a hammer and sandpaper to make it more rustic once I was done with the transfer. I plan to put hangers on the back and hang it up in our master bedroom--for a cute, romantic, one-of-a-kind piece!

  1. I have to admit that I have never watched The Princess Bride, but I have certainly heard this line quoted many times. Your signs look great! I like the way you've displayed them on an angle in your last photo. Nice job repurposing those samples :)
