Jewelry Holder - Haven Swag Challenge

8:00:00 AM

Hi folks! Do you remember me talking about Haven? Well, this DIY blogger conference isn’t just about blogging…it’s also about hands-on. During lunch one day I had an opportunity to make a jewelry organizer with some punched metal, a premade wood frame, and some pretty cabinet hardware. It was loads of fun. Basically, we cut the metal to size, used a nail gun to staple it onto the back, and attached the pulls into the pre-drilled holes.

But there’s only so much you can do during lunch…especially when you are also managing a minor medical emergency at home, as well. Yeah, I guess I’m never too far away to be a mom, right?

Anyway, I wanted to finish it up when I got home. Here's how I did it...

Luckily, I also received some finishing materials like Decoart’s Satin enamel paint while I was there at Haven and a couple of paint pens from Mohawk. I also received some new sandpaper from 3m that’s not on paper, it’s on a plastic film so it doesn’t shed and get clogged…you know, so it’s so much easier to use than regular sandpaper. So I went to work to make this jewelry frame my own. I sanded off the rough edges on the frame, and then I did 3 thin coats of the satin enamel.

This paint is pretty thin, but that means it doesn’t leave brushstrokes, just a buttery smooth finish that doesn’t need a top coat. I did 3 coats just to make sure I had good coverage, sanding after each coat was dry. Then, to add a little more interest, I used a white paint pen to freehand some swirls onto the frame.

Now, all that’s left is for me to figure out where to hang it up so my jewelry can be more organized!!

If you’re interested, there are a few more of us who used some of the items we got at Haven. Check out the blog hop below to see them!

Enjoy!

  2. Rachel,

Cute jewelry holder! Some of the hands on is limited-especially when you fly. I did the cut out wood piece and was so afraid it was going to break in my suitcase.
This was a fun challenge, don't you think?

  3. This was so cute - wanted to make that class, but I missed it. My girls would love this, so I might try to make it myself.
