Mod Podge Pop Art

7:00:00 PM

I had a photograph that I love that I took a while back, but I didn't have anywhere to put it. I love these purple coneflowers, but I wanted something to put in the twins room, which is earthtones and shades of yellow. Instead, I made it into some yellow pop art!

So I took my photo and made a black and white print. You want to make sure that the image that you start with is pretty high contrast, with a relatively light colored foreground and dark background (or vice-versa). You'll also need a sponge brush, Mod Podge photo transfer medium, matte Mod Podge, an artist's canvas (mine is 8x10) and craft paint in a color of your choice.

Tear the edges of your image so that it fits on your canvas.

Then apply a fairly thick layer of Mod Podge photo transfer medium on the print. You do not want to be able to see the image through the medium.

Place the image face down on the canvas. Keep in mind that your image will be reversed from the original, so if you are transferring something where this will matter, you will need to reverse the original print out. Now, you have to leave the image alone for at least 24 hours for the image to dry.

Once at least 24 hours have passed, take a wet sponge or rag and wet the entire image. Then rub gently to remove the paper fibers.

Keep rubbing (rewetting as needed) until all the paper fibers are off  the canvas, and all the image is revealed.

Mix up some matte Mod Podge with some craft paint. On the areas that I wanted to red as bright yellow, I mixed about half and half. The background areas had more Mod Podge in the ratio to the paint.

And that's it, an easy way to create pop art out of a photograph...no fancy photo editing programs needed.

Enjoy!!

  8. Now that is a really cool picture! I was wondering if it matters if your printer is laser or ink jet, do you know?

  9. I used a laser printer. It is my understanding from the folks at Plaid that you can use inkjet as long as it is a DRY toner. If it is a wet ink (like inside a bottle in your printer), then I think it will smear.
