Linen Stitch Pom-Pom Scarf

Ok, last week I shared with you how I have a fascination with pom-poms.

I also very rarely make anything for myself (at least, not to wear). But today, I'm going to show you a project that I made for myself--to show off that love of pom-poms.

If you are a knitter, or want to learn to knit, then you should know that a scarf with a repetitive pattern is one of the easiest projects that you can knit. Your gauge (how tight you knit) isn't extremely important, and you can keep knitting until you feel like stopping or if you run out of yarn, whichever comes first.

This little scarf has a simple, yet impressive stitch called the linen stitch. This stitch makes the knitted object drape like woven fabric, and although the front and back sides are different, I think they are equally attractive. Pair it with a super soft yarn like Red Heart Soft Yarn (this color is Icy Pond) and you will be looking forward to icy days to wrap this scarf around your neck.

This is how you do the linen stitch:

Cast on an even number of stitches (for my scarf, I cast 26 stitches onto 10 1/2 size needles)
Row 1: Knit 1, slip 1 as if to purl with your yarn in front. Repeat until the end of the row.
Row 2: Purl 1, slip 1 as if to purl with your yarn in back. Repeat until the end of the row.
Repeat these two rows until you obtain the length desired. Cast off.

Using a pom-pom maker, make 6 large pom-poms, leaving the tie-of yarn long. Use this yarn to tie 3 to each end, one at each corner, and one in the middle of the end.

Enjoy the soft warmth and fun pom-poms. Try to keep any preschoolers or toddlers from stealing your scarf.

This pattern, minus the pom-poms, can be converted to be a more masculine look. My husband has informed me that is my next knitting project, using a Navy colored Red Heart Soft Yarn.

Enjoy!
