Cinnamon Apple(Pear)sauce in the Slowcooker!

9:20:00 PM

Apples (and pears!) and cinnamon. Yum.

The very smell of them make me think of fall.

So if there is an end by product of smelling apples and pears and cinnamon for four hours--that's even better.

And that, my friends, is only one reason to make something so yummy as this dish in the crockpot.

The other is ease...I can't think of an easier way to end up with homemade apple/pear sauce. The pears really do add something...but you can make straight-up applesauce if you want.

Here's  the recipe...so your house can smell like mine did this past Sunday.

Slowcooker Apple(Pear)sauce

Ingredients:
1/2 cup water
8 medium-large apples (at least two different kinds--I used Macintosh & Golden) not peeled, but cored & cut into eighths
2 pears, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch pieces.
1-2 inch pieces of lemon zest
Juice of two lemons
(2) 2 inch pieces of cinnamon
2-4 teaspoons of agave (I used 2 tsp of cinnamon flavored and 2 tsp plain, since that's what I had on hand) or other sweetener

Please note that I peeled the pears but not the apples. I find the skin of pears to be tough, but there is no reason not to cook them too--it adds fiber and makes life easier not to peel them.

Okay, ready for the recipe? dump all the ingredients into the slowcooker (I reserved half of the agave and added to taste at the end).

Cook on low for 4 hours, until both the apples and pears can be smashed with the back of a spoon. It will look something like this:

Fish out the cinnamon sticks. As my 4-year-old taste-tester will attest, those cinnamon sticks aren't good eats (yes, Lil Bit had Depending on the desired consistency, you can puree with an immersion blender, use a regular blender, or smash with a potato masher.

Wait impatiently for the yummy goodness to cool, and enjoy how wonderful your house smells!

Wasn't that easy? You can can or freeze this just like regular applesauce. It makes about 3-4 pints.

    1. You could do it on the stove top! Just take it low and slow so you don't burn it! It's just easier in the crockpot.
